A WORK IN PROGRESS | A large part of Spanish territory suffers from desertification. One fifth of the land is currently at risk of turning into deserts, 31.5% of the land is already affected by desertification. Plants sweat like people so they lose more and more water. Vegetation gets drier, more vulnerable to plagues and the frequency of forest fires intensifies. Loss of land means a loss of biodiversity, local economy, economic basis. Whole populations, man and animal will be affected. There are also believed to be a million illegal boreholes in Spain alone, used to irrigate agricultural zones. The country's water crisis and illegal water extraction is having fatal consequences, not only for the environment.
